Get Ready

Ready to get started at Cleveland State? We’re ready to assist. From the first day you show up on our conveniently located campus until the day you walk across the stage at graduation, our faculty and staff are dedicated to your success. Here are a few ways we get you started on the right educational foot to prove to your children, your boss, and you that you can do it!

A successful start to your college experience begins with learning about the procedures, policies and resources available and making connections with faculty, staff, advisors and other students.  Cleveland State’s orientation programs help you get started on the right path. We have a two-part orientation process for new students. Part 1 is an online orientation in which you can learn at your own pace about college procedures and resources. Part 2 is a live session during which you meet with advisors and register for classes.

Students who are being re-admitted to Cleveland State or transferring from another college can meet with advisors in the college’s Advising Center to receive help enrolling in classes. New students who have never attended college will go through the orientation program to see an advisor. Making a connection with an advisor is an important step in being successful. Once enrolled, you will be assigned a faculty advisor who is a professor in your chosen major.

Adult Student Organization

Connecting with other students has many benefits. One fun way to meet other students is to join our Adult Student Organization. Meetings are held twice a month and allow you to give and receive support from other adult students and have discussions about things important to you.

First Year Seminar Course

The FYS class is an important component to your college studies. Topics covered in this course will help you be a better student, manage your time wisely, improve your study skills and enhance your knowledge about diversity, relationships, budgeting money, coping with stress and more.

Several resources are available if you need a little extra help mastering course material. The college has tutoring available in our Math Lab, Language Arts Learning Center and in other academic departments. Additionally, all students have access to free 24/7 online tutoring in a wide variety of subjects through a service called Tutor.Com.

Placement Testing and Learning Support

Adult students without previous college work will be notified if a placement test is required before enrolling in classes. If you receive this notification, we encourage you to spend some time preparing for the COMPASS test by going to Our L.earning Support courses in math, reading and writing are paired with college level courses, so you’ll earn college credit while receiving additional help in those subjects.

Student Success Workshops

Workshops geared toward issues often encountered by adult students are offered throughout the semester. Topics include using technology, time management and coping with stress.
