Forensic Science

Are you ready to explore the exciting field of crime scene investigation (CSI) and gain skills and experience needed to chart your future? Through hands-on experiences in the discovery of a crime, crime scene investigation, and evidence analysis, you will go beyond the classroom and gain the edge you need for college and a future career in crime scene investigation. Topics covered include evidence collection, forensic anthropology (bones), fingerprint analysis, blood (synthetic) typing analysis, DNA analysis, and ballistics. Participants will begin the week documenting and collecting evidence from a crime scene and setting up the CSI laboratory. Introductory lectures are followed by intensive laboratory experiences that promote hands-on activities as participants work to unravel the crime. The camp concludes with a trip to the Bradley County Crime Laboratory to witness how crime scene investigators and law enforcement work together to solve crimes.

Day 1: Crime Scene Discovery & Specimen Collection- Students will be called to a crime scene and will collect evidence. The evidence will be taken to the lab and separated into categories (photographs, human remains, fingerprints, DNA, blood typing, ballistics)
Day 2: Fingerprint & Blood Type Analysis- morning lectures on fingerprint and blood type analyses followed by lab activities that will include taking student fingerprints, collecting latent prints from items taken from the crime scene, and conducting synthetic blood typing activities related to the crime scene.
Day 3: Forensic Anthropology (Osteology)- morning lecture on forensic osteology followed by lab activity where the human remains are examined to determine an approximate age, gender, stature, and ethnicity to obtain a biological profile of the remains. Additionally, students will be led through trauma analysis that will suggest time and cause of death.
Day 4: Ballistics & DNA Analysis- morning lecture on ballistics and DNA analysis followed by the examination of ballistic evidence and DNA evidence collected from the crime scene.
Day 5: Trip to the Bradley County Forensic Lab
